01/ ORIGIN

Hand-drawn animation has a defect built into it: no animator can trace the same contour identically twice, so a held pose still shimmers slightly frame to frame. The industry called it boil and spent decades trying to suppress it with tighter inking and, later, with computers. Then digital animation arrived with perfectly stable lines and looked wrong, and boil had to be added back deliberately, because a line that never wavers reads as machinery rather than as drawing.

03/ SPEC

This effect derives contours and tonal hatching from the image and applies a spatial jitter so the strokes do not sit on a perfect grid. HATCH SCALE runs from 3 to 20 pixels with a default of 6 and sets stroke spacing, which determines whether the result reads as tight draughtsmanship or loose gesture. BOIL from 0 to 1 displaces strokes irregularly, imitating the frame-to-frame wander of hand-drawn animation. CONTRAST and the advanced EDGE controls shape which contours survive. In kott the strokes are generated per pixel, so they stay crisp at export size instead of tiling.

04/ FAQ

What is a sketch effect?
A sketch effect redraws a photograph as hatched strokes with irregular placement, deriving contours and tone from the image rather than simply inverting and blurring it.
What does the BOIL control do?
It displaces strokes irregularly, imitating the frame-to-frame wander of hand-drawn animation that animators call boil. Without it the hatching sits on too perfect a grid to read as drawn.
What is the difference between sketch and pencil sketch?
Pencil sketch builds a graphite drawing on tinted paper with grain and a construction grid. Sketch is looser and line-led, closer to a gesture study than to a finished rendering.
